10 Levels of Rejection (p.1)

💰 Example 1: Refusing to Lend Money
  • Situation:
John asks David for money, and David doesn't want to lend it.
  • Description:
    1. To categorize the "refusal" into 10 levels, we need to consider the nuance of the wording, the clarity of the reasons, and the firmness of the tone.
    2. Here are David's 10 examples of refusal, ordered from mildest (most indirect/polite) to strongest (most direct/firm).

Lv.1 Extreme Vague Delay

  • Possible Response (Example):
"Oh, let me look into my finances and see what I can do. I'll get back to you in a few days."
  • Analysis (Key Features):
[Softest] Gives a vague, non-committal promise to "look into it," effectively delaying the rejection.

Lv.2 Regretful Inability

  • Possible Response (Example):
Man, bad timing! All my cash is tied up in a super urgent expense right now. I'm so sorry, I can't swing it.
  • Analysis (Key Features):
[Polite] Uses "tied up" and "can't swing it" (colloquial for "can't manage it"), showing regret but citing external reasons.

Lv.3 Suggesting Alternativesy

  • Possible Response (Example):
Have you tried asking the bank or maybe your brother first? I'm honestly spread pretty thin right now.
  • Analysis (Key Features):
[Indirect] Shifts the focus to other options and uses "spread thin" (busy/low on funds) as an indirect reason.

Lv.4 Firm but General Reason

  • Possible Response (Example):
I really wish I could, but I have a financial commitment I absolutely cannot touch right now. Sorry, not this time.
  • Analysis (Key Features):
[Clear Vague Refusal] Uses "cannot touch" to establish the firmness of the boundary without revealing details.

Lv.5 Principle-Based Limit

  • Possible Response (Example):
I appreciate you asking, but I actually have a strict personal rule against lending money to friends. It's just my policy.
  • Analysis (Key Features):
[Mid-Level] Refuses based on a rational, pre-existing "policy" or "principle".

Lv.6 Condition-Based Refusal

  • Possible Response (Example):
If I lend you that, I won't be able to pay my rent next month. I just can't afford to take that hit right now.
  • Analysis (Key Features):
[Stronger] Refusal is tied directly to a negative personal consequence, making the refusal difficult to challenge.

Lv.7 Condition-Based Refusal

  • Possible Response (Example):
I'm sorry, I can't lend it to you. I don't need to get into the reasons why, but the answer is no.
  • Analysis (Key Features):
[Decisive] Uses direct "no" and shuts down follow-up questions about the reason.

Lv.8 Warning/Judgmental Refusal

  • Possible Response (Example):
Look, I know you've been having some bad luck. Lending you money would just be throwing good money after bad. I can't do it.
  • Analysis (Key Features):
[Forceful] Refusal includes a judgment about the borrower's situation ("throwing good money after bad").

Lv.9 Short, Unapologetic No

  • Possible Response (Example):
No. I won't be doing that.
  • Analysis (Key Features):
[Very Strong] Extremely brief and direct, offering no apology or softening language.

Lv.10 Absolute and Final Cut-off

  • Possible Response (Example):
Absolutely not! Don't ever ask me for money again.
  • Analysis (Key Features):
[Strongest] Not only refuses but sets an aggressive, permanent boundary for the future.
